Festival of Lights History

Every holiday season, Riverside, California, transforms into a dazzling spectacle of lights and festive cheer, thanks to the Mission Inn Lighting Ceremony, also known as the Festival of Lights. This beloved tradition has become one of the most iconic holiday events in Southern California, drawing thousands of visitors each year.

Beginnings of a Bright Tradition

The origins of the lighting ceremony trace back to 1993 when the Mission Inn Hotel & Spa, under the ownership of Duane and Kelly Roberts, introduced the idea as a way to celebrate the holiday season and attract visitors to the historic property. The Mission Inn, with its Spanish Mission Revival-style architecture and rich history dating back to 1876, was already a prominent landmark. The addition of a grand holiday display highlighted its architectural beauty and created a magical atmosphere that resonated with the community.

What started as a modest display of holiday lights has grown into a spectacular event featuring millions of lights, hundreds of animated decorations, and a diverse lineup of entertainment.

A Signature Event

The Festival of Lights kicks off each year on the Friday after Thanksgiving with the signature lighting ceremony. Crowds gather to watch as the switch is flipped, illuminating the Mission Inn and its surroundings with over 5 million twinkling lights. The ceremony includes a fireworks display and live performances, setting the stage for weeks of holiday festivities.

The event has evolved to include horse-drawn carriage rides, vendors, live music, and Santa Claus appearances. It’s not just a celebration of lights but also a celebration of Riverside’s community spirit, drawing people of all ages to the historic downtown area.

Awards and Recognition

Over the years, the Festival of Lights has earned national acclaim. It has been featured in publications such as USA Today, which recognized it as one of the "Best Public Holiday Lights Displays in the U.S." The combination of historic charm and holiday magic has made it a must-see attraction for both locals and tourists.

Continuing the Tradition

The Mission Inn Lighting Ceremony is more than just a visual feast—it’s a testament to the power of community, tradition, and the holiday spirit. Duane and Kelly Roberts, often referred to as the “keepers of the Inn,” continue to oversee this cherished event, ensuring it remains a highlight of the season.

Whether you're a first-time visitor or a longtime attendee, the Mission Inn Lighting Ceremony offers a heartwarming experience that celebrates the beauty of Riverside and the joy of the holidays.
