San Bernardino Encourages Residents to Safely Dispose of Unused Medications During National Prescription Drug Take Back Day

A forgotten prescription bottle in a bathroom cabinet may seem harmless, but unused and expired medications can create serious safety concerns when they remain in homes for months or even years. This October, San Bernardino residents are being encouraged to take a simple step toward protecting their families and neighborhoods by participating in National Prescription Drug Take Back Day.

The nationwide initiative, coordinated by the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration in partnership with local law enforcement and community organizations, provides opportunities for residents to dispose of unwanted, unused or expired medications safely.

National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is scheduled for Saturday, October 24, 2026. The nationwide collection period is traditionally held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

The purpose of the program extends beyond clearing household medicine cabinets. Medications that are no longer needed can present risks of accidental ingestion, misuse or improper disposal.

Children and pets may encounter unsecured medications, while prescription drugs left accessible in a home can be taken by someone for whom they were not prescribed. Safe disposal helps reduce these risks.

The initiative also addresses environmental concerns. Flushing medications or disposing of them improperly can introduce pharmaceutical substances into water systems and the environment. Collection programs offer an alternative that allows medications to be handled through established disposal procedures.

For San Bernardino families, the event provides an opportunity to review medications that may have accumulated following surgeries, illnesses or changes in treatment.

Prescription Drug Take Back Day has become a recurring national public safety effort, with collection events organized twice annually in many communities. Over the years, the program has encouraged residents to view medication disposal as a routine part of household safety.

Local participation also reflects the importance of partnerships between schools, law enforcement, healthcare professionals and community organizations.

By making disposal services available at a familiar location, organizers can help residents take action without having to determine independently how to discard medications.

Residents should review the event's accepted-item guidelines before arriving. Collection programs generally accept many prescription medications, but restrictions can apply to sharps, inhalers and other medical products.

Those unable to attend can explore year-round medication disposal options through participating pharmacies and authorized collection locations.

The message behind National Prescription Drug Take Back Day is straightforward: protecting a community often begins with small decisions made at home.

For San Bernardino residents, removing an unnecessary prescription bottle from a cabinet may take only a few minutes, but that simple action can help prevent an accident, discourage misuse and contribute to a safer community.

As families prepare for the October event, the larger lesson is one worth carrying throughout the year. Responsible medication storage and disposal are not merely personal habits. They are important steps toward protecting the health and well-being of neighbors, friends and future generations.

An October City announcement draws attention to an everyday household practice with benefits for food budgets, kitchen safety and the environment. A basket of fresh produce can represent a week's worth of meals, the results of a successful backyard harvest or an unexpected bargain at the grocery store. Yet without proper storage, even the freshest fruits and vegetables can spoil before a family has an opportunity to use them.

An October announcement highlights how investigative technology and cooperation among law enforcement agencies can help solve crimes affecting Grand Terrace neighborhoods. For residents of Grand Terrace, home is more than an address. It is where families gather, children grow up and neighbors build relationships over many years. When a residential burglary occurs, the effects can extend beyond the property taken or damage caused. A crime inside someone's home can undermine the sense of security that makes a neighborhood feel safe.

The rumble of a commercial truck passing through a city can represent two very different things. For a business awaiting a delivery, it may signal the arrival of essential supplies. For residents living near a busy roadway, it may raise concerns about traffic, noise and safety. In Grand Terrace, finding a reasonable balance between those interests is at the center of an ongoing transportation planning effort.
